Maud Hart Lovelace Book Award

The Maud Hart Lovelace Book Award is a children's choice book award. Maud Hart Lovelace was a Minnesota author who grew up in Mankato, Minnesota. Maud loved reading and wrote stories from the time she was a child. Her first poems were printed when she was ten. By eighteen, she had sold her first story. Her Betsy-Tacy books tell of her childhood in the town she calls "Deep Valley."

Each year since 1980, there has been a Minnesota reading contest for third through eighth graders. Students who read at least three books on the list of nominated books may vote on their favorite book. Voting is done in March, and on April 25, the anniversary of Maud's birthday, the winner is announced.
