Medieval warfare
Medieval weapons
Gunpowder developed from the 14th century. Guns were limited:
a. they were slow to load
b. inaccurate
c. might blow up
Archers were more effective on the battlefield. They used crossbows and longbows. However, archers became less important at the end of the 15th century when gun technology had improved.
Blood on the battlefield
Medieval battles were terrifying experiences for knights and soldiers. Fighting was hand to hand combat. There was yelling, screaming and the clash of sword on sword. Armies fought in close formations and one side would push against the other. There was no modern artillery or machine gun fire. Infantry fought each other with a range of weapons:
1. swords
2. axes
3. pikes
4. maces
5. sometimes farming tools were used
Battles were over quickly. They usually lasted little more than an hour. The battlefield was then covered with gore, blood and the bodies of men and horses.
