August 2021

Critical Supplies:

  • Sharpened Pencils-Ticonderoga and USA Gold are the best; Pencils made in China often break, the lead is off center, and they just don't sharpen!

  • Red Grading Pens

  • Kleenex! Twenty-three 5th graders go through some Kleenex!!

  • Dry erase markers

  • Extra erasers

  • Scissors

  • Package of highlighter markers

  • Package of Index Cards

  • Set of Crayons, markers, or colored pencils (Whichever your child prefers, to buy all 3 is a lot)

  • Notebooks and Folders (6 notebooks for the school year- Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies) I like to have students organize a folder and notebook for each subject, however some students do well keeping all subject notes/assignments in 1 big binder that's been divided into sections. Whichever system your student will keep organized best that's what I'm asking you to get. I spend a big chunk of the school year getting these students prepared for middle school organization and note taking.

  • Soft Pencil Pouch

  • Ear Buds-Make sure to find a comfortable pair or two

  • *******Buy as many school supplies as you can when it's being pushed off the shelves for $0.30 in late August, early September. Put additional sets of crayons, earbuds, paper, pens, folders, notebooks, erasers, dry erase markers away for after Winter break; initial supplies are broke, lost, or used by 2nd semester. I know money is stretched thin at the start of school, get the necessities for first weeks of class. You can help out our class by sending in wet wipes, Kleenex, paper towels, and hand sanitizer in a couple months if that works better for your family.

Not Necessary, but if your student will utilize:

  • 3 Ring Binder-No room in their desks but students can keep in their lockers

  • Multiple glue- 1 bottle, or 2 sticks, will be more than enough for the school year

  • Thank you so much for supporting your student and our class. If you have any questions on supplies please ask me.

This year will be a very exciting and rewarding year. We will work together as members of a classroom community to build upon the knowledge your student has previously attained. Our 5th Grade curriculum includes Language Arts, Social Studies, and Writing all within Wit & Wisdom, Go Math!, and Science using Mystery Science for weekly investigations. I will be preparing 5th graders for middle school responsibilities by balancing teacher directed activities with student initiated learning. I have lots of hands on lessons up my sleeves that I know will keep the school year moving along! Students will gain a tremendous amount of responsibility, confidence, and independence this year.

I will be using an online communication tool that students and their families will have access to view at any time. The program is called Class Dojo and it encourages positive social and academic interactions during the school day. You can access it via the web or an app on your phone. I will send home student and parent/guardian usernames and passwords in the coming week. I believe when students take ownership of their actions, academically and behaviorally, they feel empowered and make better choices to benefit themselves and our classroom community. I’ll also work to keep you informed on homework and upcoming tests with this class website under the Homework tab. Your student's graded work is sent home weekly during the school year as well as posted in their Google Classroom. Skyward is updated bi-weekly. Congratulate your student on their success, work with them on areas that need improvement. I'm always here if you have questions. Please come to me directly if you need answers.

I promise the school year will go by fast! I know there are so many other commitments you and your child have outside these four walls. Please don’t hesitate to contact me and keep me informed of anything that may hinder or help your student’s success this year. The best way to contact me is through my school email or Class Dojo, as I check those throughout the day; I am not available before 7:40 AM. I can return phone calls after the school day is over as well as set up a time to meet at West 2:40 PM-4PM. I'm looking forward to getting to know you and your child and have a great year!
