Our 5th grade science curriculum will follow the Next Generation Science Standards* (NGSS). We will read from a variety of sources that will include a textbook, nonfiction online articles, and books from our leveled libraries. Students are strongly encouraged to bring their science reading home a couple nights a week, or even over the weekend, to practice their reading fluency and comprehension. Nonfiction text is more challenging and there will be lots of new vocabulary words that must be learned.

*(NGSS for Parents) More information for parents can be found here. It will be an overwhelming shift for all in the beginning, however, very necessary for students to develop a scientifically-based view of the world around them.

The Study Jams website has many of the math and science topics we cover. It is a great resource to review lessons and is very engaging. I recommend students practice on this website often, in addition to reading the lessons from the textbook multiple times, completing practice worksheets in class, defining vocabulary terms, and participating in class discussions and investigations to be successful in science.
