According to the Sustainability Coordinator Kelly Boulton, one goal of Allegheny College is to encourage the development of citizens who actively promote sustainability. Through Eric Pallant’s Environmental Science Junior Seminar, students are exploring new forms of alternative energy and how they can be utilized on campus and in the surrounding Meadville area. The specific form of renewable energy the class is focusing on is biogas. With the addition of a biogas digester to Allegheny College, the environmental benefits can work towards the sustainable initiatives already set in place on campus. Although using biogas as an alternative energy has proven useful for developing countries, Allegheny already has successful methods for waste disposal. Implementing a biogas digester at the scale Allegheny would require would not be practical.
