Barrel Design
Some biogas digesters are single use systems, or “closed systems”. The digesters are filled and once all the gas is extracted, the entire system must be emptied and restarted. We used a very simple barrel design, which will be
described in detail below.

Continuous Flow System
A continuous flow biogas system typically consists of three parts: a main, sealed storage tank, an outflow tank, and an input tank or pipe. Waste material is added through the input and allowed to digest in the main tank. As gas is produced, pressure builds up inside the tank that pushes effluent into the outflow tank. Once the pressure difference is great enough, gas can be collected by opening the valve at the top of the tank and adding new waste material.
