Olweus Bullying Prevention Program

At AIS we strive to nurture and include all students, challenge students to work towards their potential and create a positive environment where students respect others as reflected in the AIS Mission Statement. Most of our middle school students are kind and respectful to their peers. Based on a survey taken by middle school students last year, we found that there were some students who felt they had been bullied or they had witnessed bullying by others and wished they could do something about it. We are currently implementing the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) which is designed to prevent or reduce bullying in the Middle School.

OPBB is a program that deals with bullying at the school wide, classroom, individual and community levels. We have formed an Olweus Bullying Prevention Program Committee that includes teachers, administrator, counselor and a parent. We also hold regular staff trainings for staff and class meetings for students. We are working towards creating an inclusive community where all students feel welcomed, accepted and part of the AIS Community.

Bullying is defined as: When someone repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean or hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending herself or himself.

Three key components of bullying behavior are:

  1. Bullying involves an aggressive behavior.
  2. It involves a pattern of behavior repeated over time.
  3. There is an imbalance of power.

Anti-bullying rules at AIS:

  • We will not bully others.
  • We will try to help students who are bullied.
  • We will try to include students who are left out.
  • If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home.

If you suspect your child is being bullied, witnesses bullying or is displaying bullying behaviors, please contact the counselor, or another adult at the school.
