All Anoka-Hennepin secondary schools will use a "traditional" gradebook this year. Learners are given several opportunities to practice a skill. Assignments may use a variety of scoring options (4-3-2-1 proficiency scale, numerical score, or letter grade), but the final grade reported will use the traditional letter grading referenced below. Summative assignments are weighted more heavily than formatives or classwork. All work will align to one or more of our ELA standards.
"A" Range = Advanced level of understanding
"B" Range = Beyond basic level of understanding
"C" Range = Basic level of understanding
"D" Range = Below basic level of understanding
"I" = Incomplete evidence of learning target (learner has not demonstrated mastery)
"F" = Failed multiple attempts to meet the learning target
There is no extra credit in ELA classes.
Participation:
All learners are expected to participate through listening, reading, speaking, writing, offering ideas, and note taking.
Homework/Practice:
All students are expected to read for 20 minutes per night. Most assignments are completed in class however, if the assignment is not completed it is homework. There might be additional homework as needed to meet timelines on learning targets, especially in Advanced classes.
Late Work:
All work is expected to be turned in on time. If for some reason a student is not able to finish work by the assigned due date, they should make arrangements with me to get it completed. Even ungraded formatives are important, as they provide the practice and feedback students need to do well on assessments. Students who repeatedly forget or do not turn in their work may be asked to make a plan improve work completion. When absent, the students should check in with me to see what needs to be made up.
When to Talk to the Teacher:
Parents: Email is the best and fastest way for me to communicate with you. If this is not available, a phone call is always welcome. If you call, please leave me a voicemail message and I will get back to you as soon as possible. If you would like to talk with me, in person or via Google Meet, please arrange ahead of time for a before of after school appointment.
Students: If you would like to talk with me you should see me before or after class, or before school. Please arrange a before-school time with me ahead of time to ensure I am available. You may email me any time with a question or concern.
Grade Posting:
Grades will be posted automatically as they are entered, and should be updated weekly.
