Extended Essay

The extended essay asks students to engage in independent research through an in-depth study of a question relating to one of the DP subjects they are studying. The world studies essay option allows candidates to focus on a topic of global significance which they examine through the lens of at least two DP subjects. The program requirement acquaints Diploma Candidates with the kind of self-directed research and writing skills expected by universities. The IBO recommends that a student devote approximately 40 hours of research and writing time to the essay. Students are supported throughout the process with advice and guidance from a faculty supervisor.
