Hello!

In today's class the students used their understanding of the Bill of Rights to collaboratively craft classroom contracts to help us support ourselves and each other to learn the best we possibly can throughout the year. See the details below for further insight into what students accomplished in this lesson.

Essential Question:

How can we hold ourselves & each other accountable so we can learn the best we possibly can throughout the year?

Daily Learning Target:

I will craft a classroom contract in writing with my peers.

Overview:

ln todayś class, students will use their background knowledge of the Bill of Rights to think about and create guidelines and standards that will serve as our agreed upon classroom rules. Students will ultimately work to collaboratively craft classroom contracts with their peers. Students will submit what they can do to best support their learning, what they can do to best support the learning of others, what others can do to best support them, and what the teacher can do to support them as students. This information will then be compiled & synthesized into a classroom contract that will help all of us keep ourselves and each other accountable for our learning this year. The students will then commit to the contract, making a pledge to do their best to meet the standards that we set for ourselves as a class.

Agenda:

  1. Welome & Attendance (5 min)

Wednesday September 9th

Hello!

For today's asynchronous work, the students will interpret the Pledge of Allegiance. Please see the following lesson details below for further information about student work for today!

Essential Question:

What does it mean to make a pledge?

Daily Learning Target:

I will interpret the Pledge of Allegiance by defining confusing or challenging terms with the support of annotation strategies.

Overview:

ln todayś class, students will break down and interpret the Pledge of Allegiance to better understand its content and what it means to make a pledge. This work will not only help students to better understand what the words mean when they recite the Pledge, but also help students practice annotation as a close reading strategy. This work will also help students to understand what it means to make a pledge, which directly relates to our work on Friday to finish this introductory unit by crafting classroom contracts. The students will first read the Pledge, then highlight confusing or challenging terms, use context clues to try to figure out words to substitute for the challenging terms, verify the best term to substitute using the Dictionary tool in google docs, replace challenging terms with simpler ones, rewrite the pledge in their own terms, and finally submit the assignment on schoology.

Agenda:

  1. Open the Assignment ´Interpreting the Pledge of Allegiance Annotation Activity.´
  2. Read the Pledge of Allegiance.
  3. Highlight any confusing or challenging terms.
    1. You MUST highlight terms; even if you feel like you know all the words. The idea is to break down the language of the text to make it simpler to understand.
    2. Double click or highlight the word, then click the ´highlight color´ button and select the color you want. (Make sure you can still read the text easily)
  4. Use context clues (hints from the sentence the word is in) to get an idea of what the word could mean.
    1. Write down words that you could substitute in the space provided in the table below.
  5. ´Look up´ the confusing/challenging terms using the ´Dictionary´ tool in google documents.
    1. Double click or highlight the word, click ´Tools,´ select ´Dictionary.´
      1. Or Double click or highlight the word, press ´ctrl+shift+y´
    2. Read the definition and synonyms that pop up in the window on the right.
      1. Select what you think is the best term to substitute. (could be your own)
      2. Replace the word with your selection. (keep it highlighted)
  6. Rewrite the Pledge of Allegiance in your own words in the space provided below.
    1. Write it out fully using as many of your own words as you can. Try to substitute words whenever possible, but make sure that it makes sense to you as written.
  7. Submit your completed assignment on schoology.

Tuesday September 8th

Hello!

In todayś class the students finished sharing and gathering information about the amendments that make up the Bill of Rights. The students then reviewed the amendments and decided which of the two Exit Ticket questions to answer. Finally, the students responded in writing to a guiding question in order to make a judgement and evaluation of the amendments in order to show their understanding and what they have learned over the course of this intro unit so far. Students must submit their assignments tonight by 12p, but should be finished by the end of class today.

Lesson Overview & Agenda:

Essential Question: What rights do we have as Americans and what rights are the most important to us?

Daily Learning Target: I will explain in writing what amendment is most important OR explain in writing what amendment should be changed using compound & complex sentences with the support of graphic organizers.

Overview: ln todayś class, students will complete the lesson from the end of last week. Students will briefly recap the amendments and finish sharing their groupś responses for the last three amendments we have left to cover. Then, students will think about what question they want to answer and review the amendments for their response. Students will craft their responses in writing. Finally, students will share their response with a partner and submit their assignments on Schoology. The purpose of this lesson is for you as students to gain an understanding of the Bill of Rights and the First Ten Amendments in order for you to know what your rights are & how to exercise them as well as make judegements about the Amendments. Your work will help you in practicing to build the skill of making an argument using evidence from the text and explaining your reasoning using conjunctions (and, but, or, etc.) to form compound sentences.

Agenda:

  1. Welcome & Attendance
  2. Lesson Overview & Agenda
  3. Finish sharing about Amendments
  4. Review Amendments
  5. Think about Question & Response
  6. Write Response to Exit Ticket Question
