I do not teach from a text book. Social studies is the most dynamic content area, because at its very center is the most unpredictable thing on earth: humans and their interactions with one another. Instead of the text book, I address the district curriculum through a critical examination of the past and a responsive look at present connections and ramifications of that past, using the materials and frameworks listed above. I have already told the students: "What I'm teaching you in this class is less important than the connections you make between the lessons, and between the lessons and yourselves."
