Kelso's Rap: This is a great, catchy rap song to the nine Kelso's Choices.
Goals
• To help young people learn a lifelong conflict-resolution tool
• To help young people develop and sustain the belief that they are strong enough and smart enough to resolve their own minor problems
I love using Kelso to teach about resolving conflict. He is a cute little frog that talks about Big Deals vs Little Deals. Big Deals are situations where you need to get an adult to step in for help. Little Deals are much more common. Students are taught that they are strong enough and brave enough to handle small problems on their own. If a student tries using three choices and the problem is still happening, they need to ask an adult for help. Kelso uses a colorful wheel, showing nine different ways for us to handle these Little Deals that often feel like Big Deals. These nine choices are as follows:
1. Go to another game or activity
2. Share and take turns
3. Respectfully talk it over and listen to each other
4. Walk away from the problem
5. Ignore the problem behavior
6. Tell the person to stop the problem behavior
7. Apologize
8. Make a deal or compromise
9. Wait and cool off
