Let's Talk About Dyslexia
Dyslexia Facts:
Dyslexia is a brain-based unexpected difficulty with language despite intelligence, motivation, and education.
A dyslexic reader CAN read, but the area in the brain designed to make reading automatic is not being used, so reading can be slow, choppy, and inaccurate.
Dyslexic brains have AMAZING SUPERPOWERS! (creating, building, inventing, problem solving, logic & reasoning, music, athletics, imagination, oral communication)
Dyslexia can be detected as early as 5-6 years. (some non-reading signs: delayed speech, unusual pencil grasp, & difficulty rhyming, tying shoes or choosing a dominant hand)
Dyslexia is hereditary. If a parent, grandparent, or sibling was diagnosed with dyslexia or experienced trouble learning to read, your child might have dyslexia.
Debunking the Myths:
Dyslexia is not a visual problem or about seeing letters or words backwards.
Dyslexia is not about intelligence or motivation. Kids with dyslexia are just as smart as their peers and are already trying hard, but often need accommodations to progress.
Dyslexia is not rare. Research suggests it affects 15- 20% of the population to some degree.
Dyslexia is not a special education issue. It's about early detection, intervention, and classroom accommodations.
