Introduction

Cherish the natural world, because you are part of it and depend on it.

Introducing:

The 4J/EWEB Education Partnership's Salmon Education Program!

This learning resource focuses on a natural phenomena- the life cycle of salmon, its importance as a keystone species and the interconnectedness of all living things on our planet. It provides an opportunity for students to connect with local ecosystems and tools that can help them understand how our individual behavior impacts the environment. It encourages students to use noticing and wondering strategies that will eventually lead to forming claims, showing evidence and explaining reasoning. Through critical thinking of how salmon develop, what they need to survive, threats they face and possible solutions, environmental stewardship of our planet begins to make sense. Environmental stewardship means the responsible use and protection of the natural environment through conservation and sustainable practices to enhance ecosystem resilience and human well-being. Stewardship empowers students to make a difference in ways they find important. Overall, this resource is more than just an integrated science unit, it is about teaching students how to slow down, take a look around...wonder, notice, connect and take action.

Oregon Environmental Literacy

A Framework for Incorporating NGSS, Social Sciences and Environmental Literacy into Classroom Curriculum was designed by a team of Oregon educators to:

1. Support K-12 educators as they prepare the next generation of Oregonians to experience and protect our state’s resources;

2. Define what an environmentally literate student looks like at each grade level (K-5) or band (middle and high school) (Table 1);

3. Integrate the Oregon Environmental Literacy Strands into the Next Generation Science Standards and Oregon Social Sciences Standards through the use of guiding questions
