without judgment, about whatever you want to know.
We use strategies designed to protect student privacy.
To foster a safe learning environment, we have implemented the following strategies to protect students’ confidentiality:
Discreet Overdue Communication. We do not post or read names of students or book titles in class or in public spaces. Overdue notices are sent to student email addresses or through other notification systems that can be accessed by the student or by reminding in one-on-one conversations.
Removal of Sensitive Information Labels: We do not place reading level stickers or content-based labels on the spines of books. Reading ability should not be made public by book labels, and students should not feel judged or scrutinized based on the maturity, difficulty, or content in the books they choose to read.
Minimal Data Storage: We have adjusted circulation software to erase historical borrowing data as soon as a book is returned and the record of the checkout is no longer necessary. This ensures that we do not maintain a permanent, trackable list of students’ reading history.
Book Request System: Students may access materials by a Google Form available on the library website. Requested books will be placed in envelopes with student ID only. Books will be available in a neutral space where students can pick them up without having to check out materials in front of other students.
Privacy-minded Physical and Virtual Space Configuration: Only librarians and trained staff may check out books for students, and we will set up check out stations for students to be able to discreetly check out materials. When possible, we will provide reusable book covers for students wanting to obscure book titles in shared or public spaces.
