Message from our counselor, Mme Rachel

We are beginning the Child Protection Unit. Students will learn the following:

We will also practice being safe by discussing possible scenarios.

A message from our special education teacher, Mme Lillian

We have created a new group for some Charlemagne students. The group is The Sunflower and Dandelion Crew. The group will begin meeting the third Tuesday of every month, starting November 18th.

The Sunflower and Dandelion Crew is a safe and welcoming space for students with disabilities and those who identify as neurodivergent to come together, build friendships, and celebrate their unique abilities. Through games, crafts, and conversations, students connect with one another and are reminded that families are made in many wonderful ways. Our time together focuses on belonging, confidence, and connection. Students explore themes like identity, friendship, and pride in who they are—all while having fun and supporting one another.

If your child has a disability or identifies as neurodivergent and would like to join The Sunflower and Dandelion Crew, please fill out the permission form linked here or more information you can reach out to Mme Lillian at groff_l@4j.lane.edu. We’d love to have them join our circle of connection and celebration!

English Class

This week in math, students worked on equivalent fractions on ratio tables when moving from clock models to ratios in order to addd and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.

In ELA, students reflected on their paragraph about the roles that oral stories played in the Nez Perce tribe using evidence from two stories: Coyote and the Monster and How Beaver Stole Fire from the Pines. They also began reading Thunder Rolling in the Mountains with a critical on on what the dialogue is telling us about the characters.

In health, students continue to trace parts of the central nervous system specific to the brain so far and began discussing the effects of drugs on the brain.

In my class, there should be absolutely no fidgets/squishies/sticky squishies/etc at school unless your child has a legal plan with the school for a specific need. Students in general are not using them for a need, but rather as a toy and as a distraction. I have fidgets available as needed.

Please note that due to excessive misuse and breakage of provided pencils, I will only be providing a pencil to students who tell me they need one. Pencils are not being used for their intended purpose at a very high rate.

Quoi de neuf en français? (What’s new in French?)

On Friday, students completed an assessment over content studied during Weeks 8-9.

Weeks 10-11 study guide

In vocabulary / grammar, we will be reviewing how to write, read and say increasingly larger numbers. Many students feel comfortable reading / saying numbers up to 999, but fewer are comfortable spelling them with accuracy. I will be focusing primarily student's ability to read  say dates / years in the four digits (ex: le 4 juillet 1776).

In science, we reviewed how to describe the weather. We broke into science groups, each assigned to describe the weather we experience during each season. We shared our observations with the whole class, noticing differences in weather experienced during by the northern and southern hemispheres. We listened to each of Vivaldi's concerti, "Le quattro stagioni" ("The Four Seasons") trying to guess which season was represented musically and why.

In math, we solved a few story problems in French that required us to add and multiply fractions, with the help of arrays. We developed our vocabulary around angles, triangles and transformations on a coordinate plane. We have also been developing our conceptual understanding of units of measurement when compared to other units in the same system using decimals.

In art, we did a watercolor project using the starry sky as our background. Next week, we'll add stars in the arrangement of specific constellations, organized by season, to our night skies.
