Getting Started
Why didn’t I receive my log-in information?
The email with your course invite will come from Instructure Canvas. The emails often get caught in spam filters, so be sure to check your spam folders! Make sure you are checking the email address you used to register (this is also where your confirmation email was sent).
What do I do if I accidentally delete the log-in email?
Contact Lorelle Wein at lwein@wested.org or Nika Hogan at mhogan@wested.org and one of us can re-send the invite. If you have logged into Canvas before, you can also go to sli.instructure.com to log-in to the course directly.
I forgot my log-in/password. How can I reset them?
Your log-in is the email address you used to register. If you forget it, contact Lorelle Wein at lwein@wested.org. She can also reset your password.
Navigating the course
Where do I start?
The course is organized by Modules which represent one week of work. You will see the Modules by clicking the “GET STARTED” button at the bottom of the home page, or by clicking “Modules” in the left hand navigation panel.
Each module or week has a target date range for completion, running from Monday-Sunday. It is ideal that you complete each week of work in the recommended time frame so that you can be in conversation with your colleagues. However, we recognize that as busy professionals you may not meet the suggested deadlines each week. There is no penalty for late work.
Begin with Week 0: Getting Started which will familiarize you with Canvas and help you get set up for the course.
Once you are within the Modules, you can move through the coursework by clicking “next” on the bottom right hand side of each page.
Every week there is a “Making it Real” exercise to help you bring Reading Apprenticeship into your classroom. Sometimes people need to tinker with the timing of the assignment to make the “Making it Real” experience fit into their class planning, which is fine.
What week are we on/what am I supposed to do next?
You can always look at the Modules menu where we have listed date ranges for each week of work and you can see what assignments you have completed.
In addition, your facilitators will communicate important information needed for each week in a weekly announcement. Within the course, you can locate these announcements on the left-hand navigation menu or the top of the home page.
If you’d like these announcements to go to your email or phone directly, simply edit your Canvas profile under “Settings” and add a phone or email under the “Ways to Contact” menu on the right hand side of your screen.
How do I find out who my partner is?
Your instructor will send out partner information through an announcement towards the beginning of week 2. Within the course, you can locate these announcements on the left-hand navigation menu.
If you’d like these announcements to go to your email or phone directly, simply edit your Canvas profile under “Settings” and add a phone or email under the “Ways to Contact” menu on the right hand side of your screen.
Why aren’t I getting emails/text alerts when announcements/messages are sent in Canvas?
Make sure you have included your email and/or cell number in your Canvas profile. You can edit your Canvas profile by clicking “Settings” in the upper-right hand corner of your screen. From there click “Settings” from the left-hand menu and add a phone or email under the “Ways to Contact” menu on the right hand side of your screen.
If you have added an email/phone and are still not receiving messages, check your notification settings by clicking “Notifications” on the left-hand menu. From there you can edit the frequency you receive notifications and indicate where you want the notifications sent.
Why can’t I upload a video/submit an assignment/respond to a discussion?
Check your browser! Canvas works best with Google Chrome, but will also work with Internet Explorer and Firefox. Regardless of browser, make sure you are using the most updated version as that can solve a multitude of issues.
How do I access my badge of completion?
Once you have turned in your final paper and your instructor has graded it, s/he will award your badge and you will receive it as an email from badgr.io.
