American Tenor Aaron Sheehan enjoys equal success on the concert platform and opera stage. Described by the Boston Globe as “one of the finest Baroque tenors on the circuit ... his tone classy, clear and refined, encompassing fluid lyricism and ringing force," his portrayal of the title role in Charpentier’s La descente d'Orphée aux Enfers for Boston Early Music Festival (BEMF) won Best Opera Recording at the 2015 Grammy Awards.
Aaron Sheehan made his professional operatic début with BEMF as Ivan in the world première staging of Mattheson's Boris Gudenow, for which Opera News praised his voice as "sinous and supple." His further roles for BEMF have included L'Amour and Apollon in Lully's Psyché, Actéon in Charpentier's Actéon, Monteverdi’s Orfeo, Eurimaco Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, Liberto/Soldato L’incoronazione di Poppea and Handel’s Acis Acis and Galatea and leading roles in operas by Cavalli, Handel, Weill, and Satie.
Recent performances have included The Orpheus Project (a dance programme featuring the Orfeo myth) with New Zealand Dance Company, Eumete Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria with Opera Atelier, Dom Pedro and Ottavio in Campra’s L’Europe galante for the Centre de Music Baroque de Versailles at the Musikfestspiele Potsdam Sanssouci, Orfeo Le Carnaval de Venise with Boston Early Music Festival, Apollon and Trajan in Rameau's Le Temple de la Gloire with the Philharmonia Baroque, Mr By-Ends The Pilgrim’s Progress and Mozart Requiem with Gloriae Dei Cantores, Messiah with Seattle Symphony and Boston Baroque, Bach Mass in B minor with Calgary Philharmonic and Boston Baroque, Alexander’s Feast with American Bach Soloists, the title role in Gluck’s Orphée with Pacific Music Works, and performances of Bach Easter Oratorio, Charpentier La Fête de Ruel, Handel Messiah, Monteverdi Vespers and Rameau Cantatas.
Aaron Sheehan’s forthcoming performances include Orlando Orlando generoso and Demetrius Antiochus and Stratonica (Graupner) with Boston Early Music Festival, Jonathan Saul and Glaucus in a staged production of Jean-Marie Leclair's Scylla et Glaucus with Philharmonia Baroque and further performances of St Matthew Passion, St John Passion, Mass in B Minor, and Magnificat.
On the concert platform Aaron Sheehan enjoys a reputation as a first-rate interpreter of Bach, Handel and Mozart. He has performed with Seattle Symphony, American Bach Soloists, Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Early Music Festival, Boston Baroque, Tafelmusik, Pacific Music Works, North Carolina Symphony, New York Collegium, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, and Charlotte Symphony.
A native of Minnesota, Aaron Sheehan holds a BA from Luther College and a MM in Early Voice Performance from Indiana University. On Sept. 9, 2018, Sheehan performed the National Anthem at the Minnesota Vikings season opener.
