Student Support

Financial support available for student research and scholarly activities

Registration fees for MOMA meetings are automatically paid by WCUCOM for students attending.

Conference poster printing costs are normally paid for RESEARCH posters, with several restrictions noted. See Financing Your Poster at "Conference Poster Presentations" for details.

Travel awards to major research conferences are available to presenting students on a competitive basis. See here for instructions and application form

Funding of research needs for student projects is available. This can include a wide variety of resources including commodities, software, databases, participant recruiting costs, etc. Requests for such support should be made through the Director of Student Research.

Funding of publication costs is available. To be eligible, the student must be the first author, a substantial part of the work should be done during their time as a WCUCOM student, and the journal must be well recognized in the field. Student publication of case reports together with WCUCOM preceptors is particularly encouraged and supported. All requests for assistance with publication costs should be made to the Associate Dean for Research BEFORE the manuscript is submitted to the journal.

Funding of summer fellowships is possible. To be eligible, a student must be offered an unfunded summer research opportunity at a prominent research institution. The idea is to defray costs enough to make it feasible for the student to take advantage of this opportunity. See here for instructions and application form.

Other support for student research and scholarly activities

Like most osteopathic schools, we do an admittedly inadequate job of providing a menu of research opportunities for all of our students. We are constantly striving to find more opportunities for our students, both in Hattiesburg and around the country.

Assistance with student-initiated projects. Examples of this would be retrospective studies using clinical or public health databases, survey-based research, research on medical missions trips, publishable literature reviews, quality improvement projects, etc.
