Symposium on Hydro-environment Research for Smart Cities during December 12-14, 2017
Through fundamental and applied research, water engineering in the 21st century is evolving to meet the increasing need for efficiency, robustness, and reliability. It will transform large-scale 20th century urban water systems into “smart” monitored and self-diagnosing sustainable mega-infrastructure systems that are more efficient, safer, more resistant to failures and increasingly sustainable. Talks at this symposium delivered by world renowned experts in hydro-environment research and practice focused on topics and themes relevant to smart cities such as: i) climate change impacts; ii) environmental hydraulics; iii) smart urban water supply system infrastructure; iv) eco-hydraulics and eco-hydrology; and v) water quality.
Inaugural Workshop for Smart Urban Water Supply Systems (Smart UWSS) during August 14-22, 2016
The inaugural workshop for the Smart UWSS project has been held successfully in the IAS building at HKUST during 14-22 August 2016. A series of professional meetings and technical activities have been arranged and conducted for this workshop, where the team members and advisory board experts (local and international) have shared their knowledge and experiences on the current progress and future plans of this project. Meanwhile, the research students as well as young scientists and engineers in the fields of water science and acoustic communication in Hong Kong were invited to attend for free the activities of this workshop.

Lectures on underwater acoustics by Prof. Yang TC
One of our team member, Prof. Yang TC, has given a series of lectures on underwater acoustics in 16-24 May, 2016. The invaluable knowledge from Prof. Yang can guide the experiments on high frequency waves in HKUST.

Workshop on “Smart Urban Water Systems – defect localization and acoustic communication in water”, 12 Feb 2015, organised by Prof MS Ghidaoui and Prof R Murch
The workshop focuses on the use of acoustic waves as a new diagnostic paradigm of urban water systems that will enable timely detection of UWS system defects and proactive mitigation measures, thus ensuring the proper functioning of critical water infrastructures in intelligent cities of the future. The speakers include a leader of the water supply department (WSD) of the Hong Kong SAR and renowned academics in acoustic communication in water, hydraulics of urban water systems, wireless communication, robots for water applications and sensor technology. This workshop is an integral part of our Theme-Based Proposal entitled “Smart Urban Water Supply Systems.”
