The conference will introduce students to a panel of experts from diverse careers who will share their practical experiences and discuss their road to success.

Panel descriptions

Session 1

Act Like a Lady: Questioning Media, Challenging Society, Breaking the Box:

This is an educational workshop aimed to give young women the opportunity to discuss what it means to be a woman today. Through discussion, the viewing of media examples, and an activity called “Gender Boxes,” participants will explore our society’s expectations of women. Additionally, the workshop will demonstrate the media’s impact on these expectations, how these expectations are linked to issues women deal with (such as poor body image and violence), as well as how we can respond to these expectations.

Engineering/STEM:

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) refers to the academic disciplines of science,technology, engineering and mathematics. STEM addresses education policy and curriculum choices in schools to improve competitiveness in science and technology development.

Fashion Professions:

These speakers will consist of fashion designers and professionals in the fashion industry. Speakers in the past have included designers who run their own design businesses and boutiques as well as fashion executives from department stores.

Health Professions:

This panel will introduce you to physicians and dentists with different practice specialties including those in medicine and surgery. We have had internal medicine, general practice, breast surgants, Ob-Gyn, critical care, emergency room, etc. physicians and dentists.

High School and Beyond:

This panel will be run by current high school students. This is intended to be an informative session on transition to high school, time management, extra curricular activities

and a tour of the school. All 8th graders must register for Highschool and Beyond as the first session choice.

Legal Professions:

This workshop includes attorneys and paralegals who practice in diverse areas of the law including a corporate attorney, government attorneys or attorneys in private practices.

Pharmacy:

In this panel we include licensed pharmacists, pharmaceutical research scientists and people working in pharmaceutical labs as speakers to share their experiences and also go over the training and education required to succeed in this field.

Political Sciences:

Professions in political science deal with systems of government, and the analysis of political activities, political thoughts and political behavior. They deal extensively with the theory and practice of politics which is commonly thought of as determining of the distribution of power and resources.

Session 2

Allied Health Professions

Careers include Occupational and Physical Therapist, Physician Assistant, Registered Nurse, Advanced Practice Nurse, Radiological Techs, Paramedic, E.M.T., Surgical Assistant, Registered Dental Hygienist etc. If you are thinking of being in the healthcare field, but not necessarily want to be a physician or dentist, this workshop of related professions would be a good workshop for you.

Business Professions:

Professions engaging in trade, financials, commerce, traffic, merchandising, transactions, negotiations.

Education:

In this panel we plan to provide an inside view point about what an educator's day is like and what training and education one requires in order to establish a career in this field. You will hear anecdotal experiences from teachers, principals, etc.

Entrepreneurship:

This panel will consist of business owners from various businesses and may include an interior design firm, a small business owner of a Learning center and an Editor-in Chief of an online magazine. The focus will be challenges of owning your own business and marketing your products.

Graphic Arts & Design:

These professions are processing visual communication and problem-solving using one or more of typography, photography and illustration.

Law Enforcement:

This is to open the window into the world of law enforcement. An Officer from a Police Department, a New Jersey State Trooper, an Investigator from the Prosecutor's Office and Homeland Security are invited as speakers.

Philanthropy:

In this panel we plan to have speakers from various non-profit organizations.They are taking an active effort to promote human welfare, acting for humanitarian purposes, distributing or supporting by funds set aside for humanitarian purposes.

Sexual Harassment/ Rape:

This is an educational workshop bringing awareness to issues related to Date Rape and Sexual Harassment by learning what to do to seek help from both medical and legal viewpoints. The panel is usually staffed by professionals such as an Investigator from a Prosecutor’s Office and a Sex Crimes Prosecutor.
