"She Drives Me Crazy" by Kelly Quindlen

Book Review by Naomi Freeman

The book I will be reviewing today is "She Drives Me Crazy" by Kelly Quindlen. There are many cheesy tropes in this book, such as enemies-to-lovers and fake dating. It's a book about two lesbians, a basketball player, and a cheerleader, in high school who end up hitting each other's cars by accident, and somehow that car crash turns into so much more. Their names are Scottie and Irene. When they hit each other's car, Scottie is forced to take Irene to school with her until she is able to get her car fixed, and her ex sees them riding together. Scottie sees this and comes up with a plan to make her ex jealous. Irene agrees, but only because money is involved in paying her back for her car damages. As the months go by, things change, feelings blossom out of something fake, and people try to sabotage them left and right, but they stick together through most of it, but not through all, as blossoming relationships have their problems, too. Scottie and Irene, the main characters, really embrace the fact that healing is not linear, specifically with past loves, and that's okay. I really recommend it, especially for any LGBTQ+ people, as it'll hopefully make them feel represented. It didn't treat lesbian romance as something taboo; it was simply normal, and that made me so happy. It's finally a book with LGBTQ characters that doesn't revolve around homophobia or coming out (though it is in there slightly because that's reality), and it's great for anyone out there who wants to read it.
