Star Wars Melody Variation & Composition with Chrome Music Lab!

Introduction

This lesson uses the free Songmaker which is part of the Chrome Music Lab. The Songmaker allows students to click on a grid to add melodic or rhythmic sounds. Press the play button to hear your creation.

In these Star Wars lessons, you will create your own version of the main Star Wars Theme by John Williams, using the Chrome Music Lab Songmaker.

There are multiple levels:

  • Padawan (two options) – suitable for beginners

  • Jedi Knight – good for middle school students

  • Jedi Master – suitable for middle and high school or advanced music students

  • Jedi Master II – suitable for middle and high school or advanced music students

Choose the level that you think will work best for your level, and challenge yourself to worl you rway from Padawan to Jedi Master II.

Lesson Instructions

Click on the link to open the template file for a starting point (some melody and/or bassline is already included).
Add notes to create your version of the Star Wars theme.

To save:

  • Once you’ve finished, click Save

  • On the next screen click Copy Link (1) and send that link to me (milligmf@pwcs.edu)

  • Additionally, there are options to download a WAV file (3) if you would like to keep an audio file version of your piece, or a MIDI file (2) which can be used in another software program like GarageBand, Soundtrap or Bandlab

  • The first part of the melody only is provided (plus the final note)

  • Fill in the rest of the main theme melody

  • Fill in a percussion part and choose instrument playback sounds

Level 2 – Jedi Knight

Level 3 – Jedi Master
