Equity - Diversity - Inclusion - Justice

#RepresentationMatters

As a scientist, an engineer, a husband, and a parent, I realize that my daily activities and attitudes can impact very diverse settings and touch the life of many people. I believe that every person is a unique individual with valuable perspectives, ideas, opinions, and above all, a voice. I am committed to encouraging the expression of everyone's voice, and at the same time, challenging my own opinions, viewpoints, and beliefs to support an inclusive environment where the multiple identities represented in each individual are acknowledged and respected. I hope to work with fellow researchers and students who share these values.

As individuals, we are usually affiliated to different instituttions, which are part of the wider society. Change is needed at all levels (personal, structural, and cultural) to ensure that all people develop a much needed sense of belonging.

Change is everyone's responsibility but its path is constructed by individuals who change their attitues, beliefs, and values. Only then, will change permeate towards our institutions, allowing organizational changes and ultimately towards society as a whole.

Individuals are the building blocks of our society and if we all work together we will achieve somethig bigger... We will build a community with Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at the core of all that we do.

Creating a supportive research community

Take a look at the blogpost by Julia Cisneros and Jorge San Juan Blanco about our experiences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where we created a welcoming and inclusive group that provided a safe-place for minoritized students .
