Engineering and Geoscience

I joined the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Penn State University, as an Assistant Professor in August, 2022. I am also an Associate Editor and part of the Steering Committee driving Geomorphica, a diamond open access (free to access, free to publish) journal in Geomorphology.  Please get in touch to discuss graduate student opportunities to conduct research in the broad topics of sediment transport, geomorphology, hydraulic resistance, and experimental methods. Our emphasis will be in cold regions and the impacts of a changing landscape, due to climate change, on water infrastructure and the well-being of the communities that rely on it.

Before joining Penn State I was a Leverhulme Research Fellow in the Energy and Environment Institute, University of Hull. This image was taken at the Ven Te Chow Hydrosysytems Laboratory, Univeristy of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where I obtained my MSc and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering.  I am Costa Rican, and proud to be Latino and Hispanic! #RepresentationMatters

As a Civil Engineer and a Geoscientist I am interested in the ways in which natural processes interact with the built environment and the landscapes around us. My preferred research methods are observation and experimentation.

Take a look at the Research tab for more information regarding some of the projects I have had the opportunity to be part of and current interests.
