The CG versions and second Excelsior

When a Star Trek Voyager episode called for the return of the Excelsior, rather than redress the studio model which had changed substantially, a second model was commissioned. Greg Jein created a near duplicate. While a very good likeness and filling in quite nicely on screen, the model has several inaccuracies and is detailed quite differently, including glowing warp engines. The engines more than anything else make it identifiable on screen.

A second copy was made for a display (no internal lighting components) that is identical externally. The model has not fared as well as the larger model. But it was the source used for the CG model that replaced it.

After the second model made an appearance as the USS Franklin, all further appearance were done in CG, with all of the battles in Deep Space Nine's last seasons being fleshed out by a CG model.
