Sunset Beach: Great Salt Lake: photo enhancement

Before Revision

revision note

  • This revision was a technical nagging of the eye to the designer that may or may not be noticeable on first glance.

  • In the before image there is a bleed of the orange layer mask into the horizon ever so slightly.

  • To correct this in the revision a vector mask was added to the orange color layer and the line was edited ever so slightly with a paintbrush to get rid of the overlap and keep the mountains blue.

Background:

This photo was taken at Sunset Beach at the Great Salt Lake. To represent its name it depicts a large sunset with a singular subject exploring the waters.

Design:

  • Repetition: There is repetition in the color choice and in the mirroring effect in the image for a complete look.

  • Alignment: The strong left alignment of the sun and sand creates a bold edge for the image putting an end to one side of the horizon. While the dog is centered, the bottom alignment of the ripples in the water also align with the top of the bottom reflection of the sun creating a horizontal line.

  • Color: This piece highlights a traditional blue and orange complementary color scheme, extra highlighted with the use of photoshop effects. The sky was changed to orange to allow for a glow to orb around the dog bringing attention to it as a focal point. The original photo feels washed out, while this image is vibrant and just as the sun and dog mirror each other so do the darkness of hues in the orange and blues: each getting darker as they move away from the center of the photo.

  • Contrast: The two main contrast choices in this piece are the color choices against the horizon and the type of alignment on each side of the photo. These contrast allow for an effect of almost pulling the consumer into the photo with its bold colors and pushed features.

Photoshop Skills Used:

  • Exposure Layer for heightened effect

  • Levels Layer for contrast on edges

  • Sky selection layer color and and effect
