COMP 180: Computing and Data Analysis for the Sciences

Data Analysis Project

This is an open-ended project that involves data analysis and data visualization. It includes the following parts:

Topic

Ideally you are looking for something that fits within a month of effort in a class for groups of 2-3. You are free to change your minds (even after the proposal) but you must discuss with the instructor if you do. You can do a straightforward project that is highly likely to succeed, or pursue more exploratory projects applying more advanced techniques to more complex problems. Grading is weighted appropriately to not penalize challenging topics, but clear, demonstrable milestones must be achievable. Here are some example ideas.

Groups

You are to select a team and project. Feel free to use leftover time in-class to coordinate with your group, but time spent outside of class to coordinate is expected. Groups must be 2-3 people. Note, you will be graded by participation within your group, so it is in your best interest to be engaged in your group project. If you were not in class on the day (Feb. 26) groups were decided, it is suggested you quickly check Project Teams and ask the members of a group of only 2 to join.

Resources

You can use the code of others, but it must be clear what you are doing above and beyond what is currently available to you. Also, if this project is in conjunction with the project of any other class or lab in the past or current semester, this must be communicated to the instructor to avoid conflicts.
