CATA
Galaxy Evolution

Welcome to the Galaxy Evolution scientific area 3 of the Centro de Astrofísica y Tecnologías Afines (CATA)

One of the main goals of extragalactic astronomy today is developing a more complete understanding of how galaxies form and evolve through cosmic time. The CATA Galaxy Evolution group gathers a diverse group of astronomers working in Chile using multiple observatories and astrophysical tools to answer important questions in galaxy evolution such as: a) How do galaxies evolve through cosmic time? b) What is the role of environment in driving galaxy evolution? c) What role do AGN play in quenching star-formation? d) How are the gas reservoirs affected by them?

Some of the key projects in the CATA Galaxy Evolution area

Vera Rubin Observatory LSST

We are involved in the Vera Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). We are part of the AGN, Galaxies and the Strong Lensing Science Collaborations. For more information please check the pages of members:

ALMA

We are part of multiple  ALMA regular projects and Large Programs focused on nearby and high-z galaxies including CRISTAL, REBELS, PHANGS, and ASPECS. For more information please check the pages of members:

VLT and 4MOST

We are involved in multiple projects to be conducted with 4MOST (e.g., ChANGES, 4SLSLS, CHANCES) and VLT to study star-forming galaxies, AGN, and galaxy clusters. For more information please check the pages of members:
