Some governments in Asia and the Pacific are launching new national-level governance structures to promote more comprehensive care systems and approaches. Panelists will discuss how governments are working to break down silos across ministries and bureaucracies, and the transformative potential of building care systems as an integral part of national infrastructure.

The private sector has a strong interest in the care economy not only in terms of worker well-being, but also for the investment and entrepreneurial opportunities presented by this dynamic, growing economic sector. Panelists will explore supply and demand sides of the care economy, spanning issues from child care to elder care and other emerging care priorities.

Gender norms that center care work as the principal domain of women perpetuate inequalities and undermine efforts to achieve more gender-equal outcomes in work, society, and the home. What works to transform the norms around care so that people of all genders can perform care work and have their work equally valued? Panelists will explore the evidence base and discuss data gaps that undermine efforts to perceive the economic and social value of care work.

The care economy is under-appreciated and undervalued despite being a cornerstone of economic and social life. Transforming the sector so that workers can obtain fair wages for decent work and be valued for their contribution is critical, as is ensuring that all workers within the sector have equal access to social protections and fundamental rights, including migrant workers, private sector care providers, and those in the informal sector. Panelists will discuss successful laws, policy frameworks, and transnational strategies to ensure that rights and protections extend to all.
