Al Capone Trial (1931)

Al Capone was always able to get away from prosecution for his crimes. He was known for being America's most infamous gangster; running a multi-million dollar bootlegging, prostitution and gambling operation known as The Chicago Outfit during the height of Prohibition.

The Outfit was an institution of the Mafia, and controlled organized crime in Chicago. Under Capone's leadership his gang was able to become the biggest and most powerful gang in the 20s.

But after an extensive investigation by the Federal Government they were able to catch him. Capone was indicted for tax evasion in June 1930. he was soon sentenced with 11 years in prison and charged over 80,000 in fines and court costs. (in today's money that's over 1.1 million dollars)

He served a total of 4 1/2 years in Alcatraz, but was transferred to Terminal Island Prison in Southern California. He served the reminder of his sentence there because of his health problems. He had long-term syphilis which started to affect his brain. This along with his other health problems followed him until his death. He died in his home from heart failure, as a result of apoplexy.
