Grenoble

Visiting Grenoble

(A picture I took 500 meters near the school in 2015)

Grenoble is located in a valley and is closely surrounded by three big Alps mountains. To the north lies the Chartreuse, to the south and west the Vercors, and to the east the Belledonne range. For hiking on those mountains, please visit http://www.isere-rando.com (note that Grenoble is the capital of Isere department). In France Grenoble is regarded as the capital of the French Alps.

Grenoble is proud for its winter sports and it was the hosting city of winter Olympic game of 1968. There are about 20 ski resorts around Grenoble. The nearest one is only 30 minutes from the city center. You can even ski in summer (http://www.les2alpes.com/en ).

Thanks to its many lakes, windsurfing and kitesurfing are popular too. In particular , the lake Monteynard (about 40 minutes by car) is regarded one of the best lakes to do windsurfing and kitesurfing in Europe.

Paragliding is also very popular here thanks to the mountains. Coupe Icare is one of the biggest such events in the world http://www.coupe-icare.org.

In addition, Grenoble is not far from Mediterranean. For example, the direct distance of Grenoble to Marseille is only 209 kilometers. It takes three hours to arrive at Marseille or Montepellier by Train.
