THE WORLD'S REMOTEST COMMUNITY

The world's remotest community can be found on the island of Tristan da Cunha, part of the British Overseas Territory of St Helena, Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha, situated in the Atlantic Ocean. The island is situated 1,509 kilometres from it's nearest neighbour, the equally remote island of St Helena.

The island covers a land area of just 98 square kilometres and has a permanent population of 264 people. The island's capital is Edinburgh of the Seven Seas.

THE WORLD'S MOST SOUTHERLY COMMUNITY

The world's most southerly community can be found on King George Island in the South Shetland Islands, located between Drakes Passage and the Bransfield Strait in the Antarctic Ocean. The island's population of five hundred people are made up of several nationalities who permanently man various research stations located there.

THE WORLD'S MOST NORTHERLY COMMUNITY

The world's most northerly community can be found on the Svalbard Archipelago, a region of Norway, located where the Greenland Sea and the Norwegian Sea meet the Arctic Ocean.

The archipelago consists of ten islands which cover an area of 61,002 square kilometres and has a population of 2,400 people. The archipelago's largest island is Spitzbergen, where the archipelago's capital city, Longyearbyen, is situated.
