Politically Divided Islands Of The World

Shown below are fifteen islands around the world which are divided by one or more international borders.

BORNEO

Borneo is the world's third largest island after Greenland and New Guinea. The island is situated in the South China Sea and covers an overall area of 748,168 sq km.The island is politically divided into three areas;

73% of the southern part of the island is occupied by the North, South, Central and West districts of the region of Kalimantan, all of which are provinces of Indonesia, which between them have an overall population of 13.6 million people.

26% of the northern part of the island is occupied by part of the Malaysian regions of Sabah and Sarawak which have a combined population of 5.5 million people.

1% of the island, situated on the north west coast, is occupied by the Sultanate of Brunei with a population of 409,000 people.

CYPRUS

The island of Cyprus is situated in the eastern Mediterranean Sea and covers an overall area of 9,234 sq km. The island is politically divided into four areas;

60% of the south of the island is occupied by the Republic of Cyprus and has a population of 1.1 million people.

35% of the north of the island is occupied by the Republic of Northern Cyprus and has a population of 300,000 people.

3% of the island is occupied by the United Kingdom Overseas Territory of Akrotiri, which is situated on the east coast of the island and the British Overseas Territory of Dhekelia, which is located on the south coast of the island. Between them the two territories have an overall population of 15,000 people.

1% of the island is occupied by an uninhabited United Nations Buffer Zone, which is located just north of the British Overseas Territory of Akrotiri on the island’s east coast.

EMBANKMENT 4

Embankment 4 is an island which makes up part of the King Fahd Causeway, a twenty five kilometer long highway which links the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with the United Arab Emirate of Bahrain across the Gulf of Bahrain. The island covers an area of 0.66 sq km and is the site of the Border Control between the two countries.

The island is divided equally between the two countries and has no permanent population, although Saudi Arabia does have several commercial enterprises located on it’s side of the island.

HANS ISLAND

Hans Island is an uninhabited, rocky outcrop measuring 1.3 sq km which lies in the Kennedy Strait of the Arctic Ocean. Ownership of the island has been disputed by both Canada and Denmark, on behalf of Greenland, since the 1800’s, with neither country, as yet, being able to lay claim to sovereignty of the island. Therefore this island can be found on maps showing either Canada or Denmark (Greenland).

HISPANIOLA

Hispaniola is an island situated in the Caribbean Sea which covers an overall area of 76,480 sq km. The island is politically divided into two areas;

65% of the eastern side of the island is occupied by the Dominican Republic which has a population of 9.4 million people.

35% of the western side of the island is occupied by the Republic of Haiti, which has a population of 9.7 million people.

IRELAND

The island of Ireland is situated in the Atlantic Ocean and covers an overall area of 84,421 sq km. The island is politically divided into two areas;

83% of the southern part of the island is occupied by the Republic of Ireland which has a population of 4.5 million people.

17% of the northern part of the island is occupied by the United Kingdom province of Northern Ireland which has a population of 1.8 million people.

ISLA GRANDE

Isla Grande is the largest island of the Tierra Del Fuego Archipelago situated in the Straits of Magellen, which are situated on the southern most point of the South American continent. The island covers an overall area of 47,992 sq km and is divided into two areas;

56% of the western part of the island is occupied by the Magellen & Antarctic Region of Chile which has a population of 6,900 people.

44% of the eastern part of the island is occupied by the Tierra Del Fuego, Antarctica and Atlantic Island Territory of Argentina and has a population of 126,200 people.

KATAJA

Kataja is an uninhabited island in the Baltic Sea which covers an overall area of 0.71 sq km. The island is actually two seperate islands which have become joined by post glacial rebound.The island is now therefore politically divided into two areas;

80% of the island is occupied by the Norrbotten region of Sweden, on what was once the island of Kataja.

20% of the island is occupied by the Lapland region of Finland on what was once the island of Inikara.

KOILUOTO

Koiluoto is an uninhabited island in the Gulf of Finland which covers an overall area of 0.03 sq km. The island is politically divided into two areas;

75% of the island is occupied by the Kymenlaakso region of Finland.

25% of the island is occupied by the Leningrad Oblast region of Russia.

MARKET

Market Island is an uninhabited island in the Baltic Sea which covers an overall area of 0.03 sq km. The island is politically divided equally between the Hammarland Municipality of Finland, which is the western most land point of Finland, and Uppsala County in Sweden.

NEW GUINEA

New Guinea is the world's second largest island after Greenland. New Guinea is situated in the Pacific Ocean and covers an overall area of 785,783 sq km. The island is politically divided into two areas ;

53.2% of the western part of the island is occupied by the Indonesian provinces of Papua and West Papua which have a combined population of 3 million people.

46.48% of the eastern part of the island is occupied by the constitutional monarchy of Papua New Guinea, which has a population of 6.3 million people.

SAINT MARTIN

Saint Martin is an island situated in the Caribbean Sea which covers an overall area of 87 sq km. The island is politically divided into two areas;

61% of the northern part of the island is occupied by the French Overeseas Territory of Saint - Martin which has a population of 5,700 people.

39% of the southern part of the island is occupied by the Netherlands Overseas Territory of Sint Maarten which has a population of 77,741 people.

SEBATIK

Sebatik is an island in the Subu Sea, an arm of the Pacific Ocean, which covers an overall area of 452 sq km. The island is politically divided into two areas.

75% of the southern part of the island is occupied by the Indonesian province of East Kalimantan which has a population of 80,000 people.

25% of the northern part of the island is occupied by part of the Malaysian province of Sabah which has a population of 25,000 people.

TIMOR

Timor is the largest island of the Outer Banda Archipelago which is situated north of the Timor Sea, an arm of the Pacific Ocean. The island covers an overall area of 30,777 sq km and is politicaly divided into east and west;

53 % of the western side of the island is occupied by the Indonesian province of West Timor, also known as East Nussa Tengarra, and has a population of 1.7 million people.

47% of the eastern side of the island is occupied by the sovereign state of East Timor, which has a population of 1.1 million people.

USEDOM

Usedom is an island situated in the River Oder estuary, which runs into the Baltic Sea. The island covers an overall area of 445 sq km. The island is politically divided into two areas;

75% of the western part of the island is occupied by the German state of Mecklenberg Vorpommerin and has a population of 30,000 people.

25% of the eastern part of the island is occupied by the Zachodniopomorskie region of Poland and has a population of 45,000 people.

ZHONGSHAN DAO

The island of Zhongshan Dao is situated on the Pearl River delta. The island covers an overall area of 1,055 sq km and has an overall population of around 2.3 million people. The island is politically divided into two areas.

70% of the island occupies part of China’s Guangdong Province.

30% of the island occupies part of the Chinese Autonomous Region of Macau.
