INTERNET RESOURCES RELATED TO VETERINARY & ANIMAL SCIENCE

Vijay Kumar M.

The Internet is a worldwide network of networks connecting millions of users, spread across continents, exchanging thousands of gigabytes of information, accessing numerous databases that cover everything from cooking to astronomy, all relatively inexpensively. The Internet offers virtually unlimited amounts of information related to animal medicine and provides all the tools to access it. ‘www’ is probably the most famous three letters of the last century, signifying a series of servers that are interconnected with each other through hypertext transfer protocol or ‘http’. A significant part of the credit for increasing the popularity of the Internet belongs to the World Wide Web. It is always better to use evaluated web resources as the quality of websites is a problem in cyberspace.

Gateways

One of the problems of using search engines is that they return all the data they can retrieve indiscriminately; the search engines are unable to make any qualitative judgments on the value or authority of the information they find; most of their results rankings are based on certain mathematical algorithms which can be fooled into giving undue importance to certain websites. The ease of publishing information on the Internet is one of its greatest advantages, and unfortunately its greatest disadvantage as well. Therefore, in order to get quality web resources from the information superhighway, it is better to use gateways. Gateways are also known as Virtual libraries, cyber libraries and digital collections. The gateways are collaborative ventures in which information professionals and other experts pool their knowledge and experience to collate relevant information sources on a specific subject.
