NOTE: Additional information and details on each hike will be emailed to those on the group list 2 to 4 days before each hike. After it is emailed to the list it will be the top message at http://groups.google.com/group/Vigorous-Hikers.

 Anyone is welcome to signup for the weekly emails. These hikes and many more for everyone are listed on the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club [PATC] Calendar of Activities. Sierra Club's Potomac Region Outings [PRO], http://www.sierraclub.org/virginia/potomac-region-outings,  also lists many interesting hikes open to everyone.   


Tuesday, May 7, 2024 –Buck Ridge to Sams Ridge and back - (PATC Map 10) Starting at the Buck Ridge trailhead parking on Rt 211 near the SNP entrance, we will hike Buck Ridge, Hazel Mtn., White Rocks, Hazel River and Sam’s Ridge trails. Then return via Hazel Mtn. and Buck Hollow trails. This is about 16 miles and around 3800 feet of ascent. Bed prepared for numerous stream crossings along the Hazel River trail.

Tuesday, May14, 2024 - Mt Marshall Circuit from SNP Boundary near Washington, VA - Parking at the end of VA Rt 625, (38.748378, -78.194069) we’ll ascend the Mt Marshall Trail for approx. 6 miles to a brief section of SLD then on to Jenkins Gap.  From here we follow the AT south over North Marshall (possible lunch spot here) to Gravel Springs Gap then left onto the Bluff Trail to Mt Marshall Trail and complete the loop back to the trail head. Distance is approximately 17 miles with 3,000 feet of ascent.

Tuesday, May 28, 2024 - Up Staunton River and Back on Jones Mtn. Trail -  From the Parking area at the end of 662, 38.437128, -78.367081,  We will take the Graves Mill Trail to Staunton River all the way up to Fork Mountain Forest Service Road, up to the towers, back down to the Sag, onto Jones Mountain Trail all the way around to Staunton River Trail and retracing steps back to parking. We wil make a stop at Bear Church Rock, and take the spur to Jones Mtn. Cabin and back. Those wanting a shorter hike can skip the towers and skip the cabin. (15 miles and 3200 elevation for full hike)

Tuesday, June 4, 2024 - North on AT through Washington Monument State Park (WMSP) (PATC Map 5)- We will meet in the parking lot adjacent to the Old South Mountain Inn parking lot - We will proceed north on the AT for about 1 3/4 miles before we pass the first monument in the country completed and dedicated to the father of our country, George Washington, in 1827. At the Pogo Memorial Campsite we will have lunch and then return to the start. (17 miles and 3200 elevation gain)

Tuesday, June 11, 2024 -  Big Meadows Luncheon with Rose River Splash Down.  Central District SNP. From the Rose River trailhead, we will visit President Hoover’s Rapidan Camp before having a leisurely lunch at Big Meadows Lodge.  After lunch we will descend to the trailhead for a splashdown in the Rose River; about 18 miles with 3000 feet of ascent.

Tuesday, June 18, 2024 -  Nethers, Passamaquoddy, Skyland and Back. Central District SNP. (PATC Map 10) From the Old Rag parking lot we will go up Nicholson Hollow Trail, the AT and the Passamaquoddy Trail to Skyland's back door for a relaxing lunch on the patio. We will return via the Horse Trail, Old Rag Fire Road, Corbin Mtn., and Nicholson Hollow Trails. Approximately 16.4 miles and 3300 feet ascent.

Tuesday, June 25, 2024 - AT from Thornton to Little Stoney Man and Back. From Panorama Parking Lot, we head south on the Appalachian Trail to Mary's Rock and then continue south on the AT to Pinnacles Picnic Area. There are restrooms here. The hike continues south along the AT until we reach Little Stony Man. We’ll have lunch at Little Stony Man and then retrace our steps along the AT back to the parking lot. This is an out and back completely on the AT except for the short trail up to Mary’s Rock. Total distance is about 16 miles with about 4,100’ of elevation gain.
