Sherman Bartley Rich was born 03 September 1908 in Jasper, Newton County, Arkansas. His parents were William Harvey Rich and Annie Isabelle (Vanderpool) Rich. Grace Lorene Shipp was born 31 October 1906 at St. Paul, Madison County, Arkansas. Her parents were Carter Shipp and Nancy Ann (Jones) Shipp. Sherman met Grace while he was working cutting timber near St. Paul. They were married at St. Paul, Arkansas 11 September 1928. They worked through the Depression together cutting timber, making railroad cross ties, farming and sharecropping, and raising four children.

Grace died 08 June 1976 in Springdale, Washington County, Arkansas. Sherman died 08 July 1985 at Rogers, Benton County, Arkansas.
