A Selection of Greek Cookbooks

Barron, Rosemary. The Flavors of Greece (Wm. Morrow, 1991)

______________ Meze (Chronicle Books, 2002)

Chantiles, Vilma. Food of Greece (Dodd, Mead, 1975)

Conistis, Peter. Greek Cuisine, the New Classics (10 Speed Press, 1994)

The author is a Greek-Australian restaurateur, and many of the dishes are fancier than homestyle cooking. The dessert recipes are especially delicious.

Jacobs, Susie. Recipes from a Greek Island (Conran Octopus [London], 1993)

The island in question is Hydra, where the author was lucky enough to live for some time. The recipes are imaginative and delightful -- her own take on Greek home cooking.

Kochilas, Diane. The Food and Wine of Greece (St. Martin's Press, 1990)

_____________The Glorious Foods of Greece (Wm. Morrow, 2001)

_____________The Greek Vegetarian (St. Martin's Press, 1996)

_____________ Meze (Wm. Morrow, 2003)

Probably my favorite Greek cookbook author. The Glorious Foods of Greece is a labor of love, with recipes from all regions of Greece and from many traditional cooks.

Kremezi, Aglaia. The Foods of the Greek Islands (Houghton Mifflin, 2000)

____________ Foods of Greece (Stewart, Tabori and Chang, 1993)

Marinos, June. An Odyssey into Greek Cooking (Terzopoulos Books [Maroussi], 1997)

___________ Prospero's Kitchen (with Diana Farr Louis) (M. Evans & Co, 1995)

Recipe Club of St. Paul's. The Regional Cuisines of Greece (Doubleday, 1981)

Salaman, Rena. The Greek Cook: Simple Seasonal Food (Aquamarine, 2001)

___________ Greek Food (HarperCollins, 1983 rev. 1993)

___________ Greek Island Cookery (Ebury Press [London], 1987)

___________ Meze (Ryland Peters & Small, 2006)

___________, and Jan Cutler. A Taste of Greece (Arness Publishing Ltd, 2006)

My husband's favorite Greek cookbook author.

Spanos, Anna Z. Pure Greek Cooking (Stackpole Books, 1976)

The author was born on Ikaria in 1899 and emigrated to the U.S., and the book includes fascinating reminiscences of life both on the island and in the U.S. early in the last century.

Stavroulakis, Nicholas. Cookbook of the Jews of Greece (Lycabettus Press [Athens], 1986)

Theoharous, Anne. Cooking the Greek Way (Magnum Bks Ltd., 1979; repr. Methuen, 1986)

Zane, Eva. Greek Cooking for the Gods (101 Productions, 1970)

Our first Greek cookbook and the granddaddy of them all. I still occasionally cook from it.

In Greek:

Georgiou, Haralambos. Rembetikoi Mezedes kai Lihoudies (Alpha Publications [Athens], 1987)

(Various). Paradosiakes Syntages tis Syrou (Booklet produced by the students of the Technical Vocational School of Syros, 1996)

(Collection) Sifneikes Geuseis/Traditional Recipes of Sifnos (Athens, 2003)
