Divisions

We offer the following levels of play:

Clinic Basketball: This level is open to kindergarteners and first graders who are experiencing the game of basketball for the first time. These teams are co-ed. Coaches teach the fundamentals of the game and skill development (dribbling, shooting, passing, rebounding and defense). Children play on an eight-foot basket using a 27.5” ball. Practices and/or games are held at Slade on Saturday mornings only. Athletic shoes must be worn. Parents must purchase black gym shorts for game attire.

Intramural Basketball: This level is open to children in the first, second and third grade having at least one year of experience and some knowledge of basketball. These teams are co-ed. This level continues on the fundamentals and advancement of skill development. Offensive and defensive plays are introduced at this level. Children play on a nine-foot basket using a 27.5” ball. Teams practice for one hour during the week and one hour on Saturday at Slade. Officiated games against other intramural Slade teams begin after the Christmas holidays. These leagues end with an end of year tournament. Athletic shoes must be worn. Parents must purchase black gym shorts for game attire.

Competitive County/CYO Basketball: This level is open to third through eighth graders who possess demonstrated advanced basketball skills, the eagerness to play in highly competitive leagues, and a commitment to team play. There are separate teams for boys and girls. Teams practice for one-hour twice a week at Slade and nearby Anne Arundel county schools. Most teams will play either county games on Saturdays at County gyms or CYO games on Sunday at Archdiocese of Baltimore gyms, or both. Post season tournaments are also common at this level. Mandatory player evaluations are held in late September and October to form teams. Players will be selected based on their experience, skills, and attitude. Slade students will get precedence over non-Slade students unless non-Slade students established themselves in the program the previous year. The goal of the basketball program is to have one 10-player team per gender for each age group (12 teams). The County has teams of ages 8 and under (8U), 9U, 10U, 11U, 12U and 13U and CYO has teams of ages 8-10, 10-12, and 12-14 as of the birth date on September 1. When possible, additional teams will be formed if participation, skill, and gym availability allow for expansion.
