Railways Elsewhere

'FAR AWAY IS CLOSE AT HAND IN IMAGES OF ELSEWHERE'

Introduction

This site will feature images of railways elsewhere, some far away, some close at hand, using my own photos or copyright photos owned by me taken over the last fifty years and mainly featuring steam locomotives, which were a long time a-dying around the world.

With the rapid demise of British Railways steam in the 1960s, I became interested in steam locos working in industry - coal, steel, quarries, power stations, dockyards, manufacturing concerns, sugar beet processing factories and others. From 1967 I visited quite a lot of locations throughout the UK, sometimes with an organised group as permission was usually required to visit mines and factories, though a fair bit could be seen and photographed from public places.

I was fortunate in being able to travel quite extensively overseas, particularly during the 1970's and 1980's, when a good variety of steam locos could be seen in use on a multitude of railways of different gauges.

Information on the railway situation in far-flung corners of the world was available in magazines such as 'Continental Railway Journal', 'World Steam' and 'Railway Scene'. When possible, I contributed reports on my various visits to the first two publications, to update information and assist other travellers.

Photos will often have an accompanying story, which hopefully readers will find interesting.

This is a work in progress, so check back for updates.
