New South Wales Preservation 1975 style

I was able to visit preserved steam sites upcountry away from Sydney.

One was the Marsden Museum of Historic Engines located at Goulburn Waterworks where it was a pleasure to meet the guiding light of the collection, Bruce Macdonald, one of the foremost preservationists in Australia at that time.

There was approximately half a mile of two foot gauge railway, plus other items such as an Appleby beam engine, steam rollers, traction engines and a steam lorry. I counted seven steam locos in a more or less complete state plus various parts from four others. The Appleby, London, engine was installed at the waterworks in 1883, was restored in 1950s and was still operational in 2017 per this YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crOTWrmiLy0.

My visit was on a Saturday afternoon, with one loco in steam working a train between the entrance gate and waterworks. The loco was STELLA 0-6-0T OC Krauss 3423/ 1896. I had a footplate ride and also did some linesiding.

Views of STELLA at the waterworks and on the line.

Top left: Three locos in the collection, a Baldwin 0-4-2T on the left with a Davenport 0-4-0ST on the right and a Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0 behind it.

Bottom left: one of the partly dismantled locos.

Centre is a Fowler 0-6-0T and right is a closer view of the Hudswell.
