What is Special Olympics?
The History of Special Olympics...
Eunice Kennedy Shiver started a day camp in her backyard for individuals with intellectual disabilities in June 1962, which she and her husband Sargent Shiver continued through the summer of 2006.
Special Olympics is a worldwide sports training and athletic competition program open to individuals who are at least eight years of age and who have been identified with an intellectual disability and/or moderate to severe autism, and whether or not these individuals have also been identified with other mental or physical disabilities.
Eunice's goal when she started Camp Shiver; was to provide individuals with intellectual disabilities an opportunity to learn and perform athletic skills and compete against their intellectually disabled peers.
Eunice had a passion for sharing her love of athletics and teaching individuals with intellectual disabilities the skills necessary to compete in a competition.
