THE RECORD

PALISADES PARK – While Hasbrouck Heights was putting up some otherworldly numbers in sweeping the Meadowlands Division boys and girls titles at the New Jersey Interscholastic Conference track meet Wednesday at Overpeck Park, and Lyndhurst was comfortably extending its streak in the Liberty Division boys race, New Milford’s girls were plugging along in a tight three-way Liberty battle with Lyndhurst and defending champion Secaucus.

Halfway through the 16-event meet, the Knights were in third place, five points behindLyndhurst and eight points behind Secaucus. Six events later, New Milford had all but clinched its first league title since 2000, despite not winning any of the six events.

"We have an amazing group of seniors," New Milford coach Greg Kelly said after his team finished off a 129-110-104 win over the Patriots and Golden Bears. "But they were so nervous today before the meet started that we got off to a slow start, but when they started to relax, they did what was needed, just like they have all year."

Senior Jenean Igmat led a 3-5-6 finish in the 100 hurdles, and seniors Jenn Teets and Jaimee Tiu went 2-5 in the 800. Teets was edged by a brilliant kick from Dwight-Englewood’s Hannah Jerome. Senior Nawal Abdallah led a 2-6 finish in the javelin as New Milford grabbed the lead and senior Khadijah Cox was second in the 200.

Abdallah, in just her second meet throwing the discus, took another second (with a teammate sixth), and when Igmat led a 3-4-6 finish in the long jump, the meet was all but over. Teets and Tiu made it certain with a 1-3 finish in the 3,200 meters.

"I’m ecstatic over everything that we did today," said Kelly, whose team was undefeated in dual meets. "These girls came through again as they always do."

Lyndhurst had only one double winner in 100/high jump champ James Wenger in its 160-97 1/2 win over New Milford for a third straight title, but the Golden Bears, buoyed by a 1-2-3 sweep of the pole vault, scored in every event.

Hasbrouck Heights had an all-time dominant meet. The girls won 11 of 16 events and outscored the rest of the league, 247-242, led by freshman Stacey Porzl’s triple in the 100, 200 and 400, and a leg on the 4-x-400 relay, and senior Irene Cedano’s wins in the shot and discus.

But even that paled next to the boys’ overwhelming achievement. Heights won every event but the 1,600 (Danny Cordero of North Arlington) and pole vault (Travis Fisher of NA), had 44 of its 46 entries medal (scoring three athletes in 13 events), and outscored the rest of the league, 296-192.

Seniors Roland Gamez and Anthony Seidel capped extraordinary league careers, with Gamez winning the high jump, 110 hurdles, triple jump and long jump for the second straight year. Seidel won the shot, discus and javelin.
