Snow removal ordinances

The Newton Board of Aldermen passed new sidewalk snow removal laws that will take effect this year. Basically, all residents are responsible for clearing the entire length of their sidewalks and may not throw the snow into the street. Contractors and city plows are responsible for not obstructing the sidewalk by building up snow banks, including at corners. Problems can be reported at Newton's 311 phone number or online and will be responded to promptly. There is a fine for non-compliance. The city maintains a list of volunteer shovelers and can provide assistance to elderly and disabled residents.

Sec. 26-8D NEW AMENDMENT: Trial Program for Removal of Snow and Ice From Sidewalks. Every owner or occupant of a building or lot of land abutting a paved sidewalk is required to remove snow and ice from the sidewalk and handicap access ramps within 30 hours after storm has ceased.
