I would like to announce that Ted MacRae has volunteered to take on the role of Editor for WGNSS. Many of you know Ted as a very active member in the entomology group. He has written many excellent articles for Nature Notes. He also maintains a blog, "Beetles in the Bush". Be sure to congratulate him on taking on this important responsibility for WGNSS. More important, you can help him in his new role by contributing articles for publication in Nature Notes. Because we are transitioning to a new editor, you did not receive a September Nature Notes. Although she has relocated, Malinda Slagle will edit our next issue, the combined September/October Nature Notes. Please send her submissions by Sept. 10 at her new email address. Botany Chair Jack Harris asked me to mention the 30th birthday party of the Native Plant Society, scheduled for the weekend of September 26. Though technically not entomological, many of the speakers are well known and have made presentions at WGNSS meetings including to the entomology group.
Finally, Anne McCormack is looking for Natural History photos to post on the WGNSS web site. If you have a picture you think is worth showing, send to Anne. As you see on our photo page, insect photos are welcome! |

Wednesday, September 23, at 7:30 PM, join us as we share a meeting with Missouri Native Plants Society at Powder Valley Nature Center. Our speaker will be 2008 winner of the Scudder Scholarship (sponsored by WGNSS), Nicole Miller. Miller is a PhD. candidate researching pollination of glade plants endemic to Missouri. When she talked to the entomology group last fall, she presented her findings from an entomological point of view. At this meeting, Nicole will present her research from the plants point of view.
Sunday, September 27 at 7:00 “Insect Show and Tell Night”. Come and hear stories about insect collecting trips over the summer. This is an opportunity to show everyone all those insects and insect related items that have been added to your collection. A computer and projector will be available for you to show powerpoint (XP compatible) slides of the insects you saw. Experts will be present to help you with insect identification. We will be meeting at the home of Richard Thoma, 320 Frieda Ave., Kirkwood, MO. For directions to this event, feel free to contact Rich by email or at 314-965-6744. This year, if the weather is warm, I promise to have the air conditioner on.
Sunday, October 18 at 7:00 PM – Bob Merz, Caretaker of Invertebrates at the St. Louis Zoo will discuss “The American Burying Beetle”. Come and find out how the St. Louis Zoo is rearing this endangered species and future plans to reintroduce it into the wild. The meeting will take place at the Monsanto Auditorium on the lower level of the Living World at the St. Louis Zoo. For this event, park on the north side of the zoo and come in the Living World entrance. Someone from the entomology group will be there to guide you to the auditorium. For the November meeting, Kyra Krakos, the 2009 Menke Scholarship winner will present her findings on Plant-Pollinator interactions. Look to future announcements for the exact time and place for this meeting.
