Sir Alfred Hitchcock (1899 –1980) was an iconic and highly influential director and producer who pioneered many techniques in the suspense and thriller genres.

After a substantial film career in his native Britain, he moved to Hollywood and became an American citizen with dual nationality in 1956, thus he also remained a British subject.

Hitchcock directed more than fifty feature films in a career spanning six decades, from the silent film era, through the invention of talkies, to the colour era.

He was among the most consistently recognizable directors to the general public, and was one of the most successful film directors during his lifetime. He continues to be one of the best known and most popular filmmakers of all time.

  1. Murder! (1930) – Herbert Marshall

    1. An actress in a traveling theatre group is murdered and Diana Baring (Norah Baring), another member of the group is found suffering from amnesia standing by the body. Diana is tried and convicted of the murder, but Sir John Menier (Herbert Marshall) a famous actor on the jury is convinced of her innocence. Sir John sets out to find the real murderer before Diana's death sentence is carried out.

    1. A rich family, the Hillcrests, is fighting against the speculator, Mr. Hornblower (Edmund Gwenn), who sends away poor farmers to build factories on their lands. When Mrs. Hillcrest (Helen Haye) finds out that Chloe Hornblower (Phyllis Konstam) was a prostitute, she uses this secret to blackmail the speculator and force him to stop his business.

    2. The Man Who Knew too Much (1934) - Lesle Banks & Peter Lorre

      1. A man and his wife receive a clue to an imminent assassination attempt, only to learn that their daughter has been kidnapped to keep them quiet.

    3. While traveling in Switzerland, the child of a well-off couple is kidnapped. She is held to ensure that her father does not reveal what he knows about a planned assassination. Since they can't talk to the authorities, the parents plan to begin the search for their daughter on their own.

    4. This is the original, British-made movie from 1934 and is now in the public domain. After coming to the United States, Alfred Hitchcock produced a remake of this movie in 1956 starring James (Jimmy) Stewart and Doris Day. The remake remains under copyright.

    1. One of Hitchcock's earliest hits, The 39 Steps sees The Master unraveling the soon-to-be-typical plot of an innocent man on the run, trying to prove his innocence.

    2. Richard Hannay (Robert Donat) is a Canadian visitor to London. At the end of "Mr. Memory’s show in a music hall, he meets Annabella Smith who is running away from secret agents. He accepts to hide her in his flat, but in the night she is murdered. Fearing he could be accused on the girl's murder, Hannay goes on the run to break the spy ring.

  1. Young and Innocent (The Girl Was Young) (1937) – Nova Pibeam

    1. A man on the run from a murder charge enlists a beautiful stranger who must put herself at risk for his cause.

  1. The Lady Vanishes (1938) - (USA) –Margaret Lockwood and Michael Redgrave

    1. Travelers on a trans-European train are delayed for a night due to bad weather in an unnamed country. The passengers cram into the small village hotel where socialite Iris Henderson meets an old governess called Miss Froy. Shortly after the journey restarts, Miss Froy disappears.
