Karts

Feb 2011 Newer Trailer

Modified the trailer once again. This time I like the design. It still holds three karts nicely. Easy single person loading and unloading.

I had to remount the axle about 16" further back. This meant cutting off the welded on fender mounts. Going to make some bolt-on ones this time to replace. Should be easy enough to strap down the karts. I might want to add some wood wheel chocks for positive location.

Sept 2010 New Trailer

To carry all three karts I made this new 4x10 platform trailer. The conversion of the hovercraft trailer was not big or stable enough. I also made two new kaddies out of steel.

01/27/2010: Trailer

I am tired of transporting the kart in the back of the Honda Pilot. Not just having to dismantle it to fit it in. But it's a tight squeeze and every seat is taken up. First I was going to make a super-duper carrier that fitted in the hitch receiver but doubted that was a good idea. Next idea was to use the hovercraft trailer - I could build a flat platform on top of that. I had a sheet of 4x8 3/4" CDX (minus a corner that I used for bathroom remodel) and a bunch of 2x6 redwood so bought a box of deck screws and put it together. I had to raise it over the rollers that the hovercraft uses. Not ideal - but cost just $7 to do and I can roll it into my garage (once I make space) so it can be ready to go but secure.

Tomar 3-plate Clutch

Old clutch with remains of broken plate inside.

Drilling out the clutch cover to make the opening bigger.

Found a bolt puller the easiest way to get the clutch off.

Old clutch in the background. You can see the spacers I had to make to align the sprocket far enough away from the flywheel and the thick washer to go behind the nut (to fit inside the new clutch and put the nut right at the end of the thread) - Thanks for kartdude00 for this information. I took 1" cold-rolled stock and drilled 3/4" to make the spacer and parted off at 0.125" thick. I drilled 5/8" for the new washer and again parted off at 0.125" thick. The 1" O.D. works perfectly in both cases.

NOTE: I had to remove the starter motor cover that had been installed. Not sure if that is std or not but it did not allow the cover to be fitted properly with 10mm nuts on the back of the screws.

Plenty of room to get at the clutch with the cover on. New RK Heavy Duty GB428MXZ chain installed - no master links this time - just riveted.

The 3/16x1/4 key had to be ground a tad to get it to fit the engine shaft keyway - I got it tight but then it was a little loose in the keyway of the clutch. Must be a slight mismatch in width - no biggie I hope but could feel just a bit of slop.

New Ribtect Large seat fitted. Wider than the other seat at the hips. Much better and bit more accommodating for guest drivers too. It's fitted further back too and I definitely notice that the steering wheel is further away. Will have to wait for the track to see how it feels for real.
