For the first time since the 1960's, HBA is fielding its own track & field program. Previously, HBA students participated with students from several other smaller private schools in the Pac-Five program. But with increasing participation and enthusiastic support from coaches, students and parents, the HBA athletic department felt the time was right to administer this new sport.
Overall 91 students in grades 7 to 12 – 47 girls and 44 boys – are currently out for the sport. For the majority of students, this is the second or third sport that they are participating in this school year.
HBA math teacher and girls cross country coach Ross Mukai is serving as the program coordinator and head coach. Other coaches are HBA math teacher and cross country coach Aaron Kondo (HBA ’05), HBA physical education teacher and bowling coach Greg Hayashi, HBA Vice Principal Nolan Namba, Stephen Yadao (father of Kanoelani, HBA ’13), HBA cross country coach Leilani Olaso, HBA girls basketball coach Arjay Gruspe (husband of Christian Ministries’ Tara Gruspe), Neil Takeda (father of Logan, HBA ’16), and Stefany Baker (HBA ’10). Hayashi has an extensive background in coaching running and was inducted this year into the Washington State Cross Country Hall of Fame. Gruspe was a Parade Magazine Track & Field All-American in high school
HBA track coaches Stephen Yadao and Ross Mukai keep an eye on races as they time HBA runners.
The HBA track team was initially practicing at Farrington High School. However, HBA has recently also been granted access to Moanalua High School. Both schools have dirt and cinder tracks. Often the distance runners remain at HBA while the sprinters go to the high school tracks. The throwers work out at HBA most of the time, but will likely go to Moanalua at least once per week. The hurdlers work out at Roosevelt High School on the Rough Riders’ state of the art synthetic track three times per week.
On February 18th about a dozen of the middle-schoolers participated in the first ILH intermediate meet of the season held at Punahou School (see photos). HBA participated in running events only.
The junior varsity and varsity athletes will participate in their first meet of the season February 26th at Iolani School.
