Septimius Severus

Note: My site (Site Map) mainly has information concerning Elagabalus (page), focusing on his coins from Markianopolis (Marcianopolis). However, branching out a bit, I have started listing some of the other rulers who have coins from Markianopolis (page)

Septimius Severus (wikipedia) reigned 192-211 AD and was the great uncle of Elagabalus. The Severan Dynasty family tree from wikipedia. Note: Elagabalus is listed under Heliogabalus.

Obverse: AY k L c¥P c¥vhpoc (AY K L CEp CEVHPOC) Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right. Reverse: v FL ovLPianoy mapkianoPoLit (V fL OVLpIANOY MAPKIANOpOLIT). Eagle standing facing, head right, with wreath in beak. It was minted under Legate (Magistrate) Flavius Ulpianus between 208-210 AD based on the Legate. The diameter is 27mm and is 9.69g, die axis 45 deg. Reference: Moush-389, Varbanov 818 (R4), Jekov 6.14.1.14 (R2), AMNG I 584, BMC III Thrace 8.

Obverse: AY ... c¥vhpoc (AY ... CEVHPOC) Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right. Reverse: v +L ovLPianoy mapkianoPoLitVn (V +L OVLpIANOY MAPKIANOpOLITwN) Homonoia standing left, wearing kalathos, holding patera and cornucopia. The diameter is 27 mm and is 9.44 g, die axis 0 deg. Reference: Moush-385, BMC III Thrace 5v depending on legend, Jekov 6.14.36.6-11, depending on obverse legend, though probably 7 or 9 based on the reverse legend. Varbanov 833, 834, 835, 844, or 845. With 833-5 the reverse legend begins with Y +, while 844-5 begin with Y phi. I'm pretty sure that it is Y +. 833-835 vary based on the beginning of the obverse legend AY k L c¥P (AY K L CEp), AY k L c¥Pt (AY K L CEpT), and AY L c¥Pti (AY L CEpTI) respectively. The front part of the obverse legend is largely missing, however the third letter is most likely a K, which would leave us with Varbanov 833-834, both (R2), probably.
