Samuel W. Lape Sr. (Obituary)

SUMMIT — Samuel Ward Lape Sr. of Summit died Thursday, July 18, 2002, at his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Lutheranville in the town of Summit, on Sept. 16, 1922, the son of Samuel J. and Phoebe Edith (Ward) Lape.

He was a graduate of Richmondville Central School, member of the Richmondville Future Farmers of America and valedictorian of the Class of 1940.

He married Margaret Theresa Kearney on June 24, 1945, at St. Gregory the Great Roman Catholic Church, New York City.

He worked as a farmer on the family farm in Lutheranville, town of Summit, and retired after 20 years of employment at the State University College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill.

He was a member of the Board of Fire Commissioners of the Charlotteville Fire District, chairman of the Summit Board of Assessors, past master of Summit Grange 1536, member of the Schoharie County Historical Society, member of the Richmondville Central School Alumni Association, member of the Summit Methodist Church and for the last 40 years a member of St. Anna's Roman Catholic Church, Summit.

He enjoyed traveling, reading and being with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret T. Lape of Summit; five sons, S. Ward Lape Jr. of New York City; William R. and Teresa M. Lape of Sauquoit, Jeffrey J. and Susan J. Lape of Cicero, Richard T. and Ann M. Lape of Richmondville, Timothy R. and Lynn M. Lape of Warnerville; a daughter, Elizabeth E. and Howard W. Burt, Jr. of Cobleskill; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, July 21, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Robert Guffin Funeral Home, Chapel Street, Cobleskill.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, July 22, at 11 a.m., at St. Anna's Roman Catholic Church, Summit.

Burial will be at Summit Rural Cemetery, Summit.
